Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has said that General Elections in Pakistan may get delayed until March next year after Council of Common Interest (CCI) approved the new census, which requires the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to carry out fresh delimitation of constituencies.
According to the details, if the ECP decides to carry out fresh delimitation of constituencies, the General Elections may be delayed until third week of February or the first week of March next year.
It is mandatory for the ECP to hold upcoming General Elections on the basis of the fresh digital census after the CCI meeting unanimously approved the 2023 headcount on Saturday. According to a statement issued after Saturday’s meeting of the CCI, the approval came after consensus with all four Chief Ministers and representatives of all political parties.
Sanaullah said that holding fresh delimitations is also a constitutional obligations and two general elections cannot be held on the basis on one census. He added that Constitution of Pakistan also mandated that fresh delimitation of constituencies be held after results of the new census are officially notified.
If the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) decides to hold fresh delimitation of constituencies, the Pakistan General Elections 2023 will be delayed to late February or March 2024.
