“The president dissolved the National Assembly on the advice of the prime minister under Article 58-1 of the Constitution,” the President’s Office posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

With the dissolution of the lower house of parliament, the federal capital also stands dissolved and process for the formation of the interim government will begin under Article 224 of the Constitution.

Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Murtaza Javed Abbasi, stated that the ministry will issue a notification on the approval of the summary and formation of the caretaker government.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Raja Riaz will hold consultations to finalize the name of the interim Prime Minister. However, if they fail to come to an agreement in three days, the matter will go to the parliamentary committee for the appointment of the caretaker PM.

The parliamentary committee will need to finalize the name of the caretaker PM within three days as well and if it failed to do so, the matter will fall to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), who will pick the caretake prime minister within two days from the names proposed by the opposition and the government.

Furthermore, the electoral body will announce the date for the general elections under Article 224-1 and if the assembly is dissolved before the completion of the constitutional term, the general elections will have to be held within 90 days.

However, it is likely that general elections will be delayed in the country after the Council of Common Interests (CCI) approved new census results, which requires the ECP to carry out fresh delimitation that can take up to four months.
