Pakistan Railways has announced plans to reinstate two passenger trains, Bolan Mail and Akbar Bugti Express, connecting Quetta with Karachi and Lahore, respectively. Divisional Superintendent Quetta, Muhammad Yousuf Leghari, confirmed the decision, stating that, as per the caretaker government and PR authorities’ directives, efforts are underway to restore these trains. Bolan Mail is scheduled to resume operations on December 25, 2023, while Akbar Bugti Express will be reinstated in March 2024.
The reintroduction of these trains is expected to facilitate travel between Sindh and Punjab and Balochistan, enhancing connectivity. Presently, Jaffer Express is the only operational passenger train in Balochistan, operating between Quetta and Peshawar, along with local Chaman & Hurnai trains.
DS Railway highlighted that Bolan Mail will consist of 12 coaches, including a dining car and bedding facilities. Passengers will be provided with clean blankets, pillows, and standard food services. In October, Pakistan Railways reinstated train services at the Sibi-Harnai section after an 18-year hiatus caused by the destruction of bridges and railway tracks in 2006. The reconstruction aimed to meet the demands of the local population in Harnai and Sibi.
Muhammad Yousuf Leghari noted the successful operation of the Sibi-Harnai section and mentioned plans to introduce freight trains to boost the province’s economy. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance rail connectivity and economic development in the region.
