Turkey earthquake: At least 25 killed, over 800 injured

At least 25 people have been killed along with more than 800 injured after an earthquake struck the Aegean Sea with tremors felt across both Turkey and Greece.

The earthquake in Turkey was recorded at magnitude of 7.0 by the US Geological Survey while Turkey’s own Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) said put the earthquake at magnitude of 6.6.

The epicenter of the earthquake was 17 km off the coast of the Izmir province with a depth of 16 km according to the AFAD while the US Geological Survey said the depth was 10 km and epicenter was 33.5 km off the Aegean coast.

Over 20 buildings collapsed after the earthquake hit the Izmir province of Turkey with tremors even felt as far as Ankara and Marmara, where Istanbul is located. However, there are no reports of damages from the region according to Istanbul’s governor.

Rescue operations are underway with several people still stuck under the rubble and teams working hard to look for missing people while authorizes have warned everyone from returning to damaged buildings.

Furthermore, there were two deaths reported from the Greek island of Samos with tremors of the earthquake felt as far as the Athens, the capital of Greece.

Authorities also warned people to stay away from the coast after the small tsunami hit the Turkish coast as well as affected Samos with water flooding the streets.

Rescue operations are currently underway and the death toll could rise and teams find more missing people trapped under the rubble of buildings that crashed after the earthquake Turkey and Greece.
