The video streaming giant Netflix has announced a $100 million dollar fund for actors and crew that have been affected because of the coronavirus outbreak.

According to the content officer at Netflix Ted Sarandos the company will help support these people through this difficult time the same way the community has supported Netflix through all the good times.

Netflix is keeping the casts and crew of several suspended productions on payroll for the coming weeks while the company figures out how they can distribute the fund.

Ted Sarandos said:

This community has supported Netflix through the good times, and we want to help them through these hard times, especially while governments are still figuring out what economic support they will provide.

He further added:

Almost all television and film production has now ceased globally — leaving hundreds of thousands of crew and cast without jobs,

These include electricians, carpenters, drivers, hair and makeup artists and more, many of whom are paid hourly wages and work on a project-to-project basis.

According to Sarandos, $5 million from the fund will be going to the organizations and non-profit groups that are helping out film crews in countries where Netflix has a large production base.

He went on to say:

What’s happening is unprecedented,

We are only as strong as the people we work with and Netflix is fortunate to be able to help those hardest hit in our industry through this challenging time.
