The Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) is reportedly launching a new e-Challan system to deal with traffic violations in the capital and penalize violators. According to the details, the new e-Challan system will automatically impose a fine against different types of violations to motor vehicle owners.
The development comes after Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic, Dr Mustafa Tanveer, shared details of the e-Challan system with Daily Times. He stated that a similar system is already being operated in many countries of the world. “Keeping pace with technological advancement, we decided to launch an automatic system with lesser human involvement to control the traffic violations issue.” he added.
SSP Tanveer added that the digital system would be linked to CCTV cameras of the Safe City Project installed at various locations throughout the capital. According to the SSP, when someone commits a traffic violation, the CCTV cameras will blink and capture the picture of the number plate of the vehicle.
The new Islamabad e-Challan system will be installed with some codes of compressive traffic rules to determine the type of violation and issue a penalty/fine accordingly to the motor vehicle owner. Furthermore, if the vehicle owner ignores the fine, his vehicle will be impounded after a certain time.
The SSP said that excise and taxation departments of all the respective provinces are taken on board. “The purpose of approaching them was to get registered vehicle’ owner details,” he added. It means that the new e-Challan system will not only work for Islamabad registered numbers but also other provinces.
However, Dr Tanveer confirmed that the system will initially start with Islamabad and Punjab registered numbers. “As per an assessment most of the vehicles plying in the ICT are having registration with Islamabad and Punjab respectively that’s why only these both stations are yet made part of strategy,” he said, adding that other provinces will be included with time.
